Children’s ski fashion 2013- Girls only!

We have a ski trip approaching and I realised that the Ski Bunny (age 2) needs new ski gear- she has always had a mix of borrowed, hand me downs and a few gorgeous pieces of her own… but as she is wearing size 4 clothing in some things (tall girl) I will get her a new outfit all of her very own. I thought that I would do a wrap up of some of the latest and cutest gear for stylish girls on the slopes.

i’m tossing up between a one piece and a jacket/ combo for her…one pieces are better for important things like making snow angels and keeping snow out when you tip over on skis.. but a jacket can give you more options for day to day wear too if you live in a cold climate. I’ve got lots of tips on choosing ski gear for kids here if you need some ideas

One thing that I recommend you look for in any kids skiwear is the “”Grow-it” feature on most pieces- this allows you to get an extra season or 2 out of jackets and pants by lengthening the sleeves and pants- usually you just need to clip some threads and you gain an extra few inches in length- whoever came up with this feature is a genius! Today I’m looking at girls fashion- and if you are afraid of pink… look away… everything here has been selected with the Ski Bunny in mind and as in her words, “I like pink and princesses and ballerina’s”.

I’ve pulled pieces from lots of the major ski brands to share the best of 2013 girls ski fashion and had fun reviewing the looks. I’ve been super imressed with girls ski fashion this year- it borrows from the “big girls” and takes trends straight from the runways- lots of floral prints, some graphic digital print elements and bright pops of retro colours and designs.

My picks for ski season 2012-2013

Clicquot in the Snow- Beauty Bag

The ski season’s glamour event is Clicquot in the Snow- currently on in Queenstown, and starting next week in Thredbo. This is high style on the slopes, with a series of pop up events around various locations on the mountain.

As part of Aspen’s Clicquot in the Snow celebrations this year, Veuve partnered with cult beauty brand Fresh to create the ultimate ski weekend beauty bag. Perfect travel size goodies of the brands best. My fave’s are the brown sugar hand cream and the Citron de vigne fragrance, inspired by the champagne itself.

Ski Fashion 2012

On my first ever ski trip, I hit the slopes resplendant in a fluro ski jacket- it was pink, yellow and bright blue- I loved that jacket and I loved that first ski holiday. Since then, my skiing has improved as has ski fashion, although this year there are some retro throwback styles if you still want a flash of fluro. This season, ski fashion is taking reference from the catwalks, and interpreting key seasonal trends in alpine style.

Some trends to interpret into your ski wardrobe this year:

Colourblocking: is key this winter. Obermeyer have made this trend really easy to adopt with some terrific mix and match jackets and ski pants at reasonable prices. I love the “Malta” ski pants in “Waterfall”-a beautiful blue, reminiscent of my fave J Brand turquoise skinny jeans. Think clear bright colours, sunshine yellow. aqua blue and raspberry. I love SKEA’s signature puffa’s too- I first spotted these at Aspen Fashion Week, and want them in every colour: Tangerine, Peony Pink, Aquamarine and Violet, these are a great fun pop of colour.

Pattern: plaids and delicate floral features on jackets and pants are a great chance to express your style. My tip is to wear only one item with a strong print- work it back with a solid pant or jacket in tonal shade. Roxy have collaborated with Torah Bright to develop some gorgeous jackets with graphic patterns, plaids and prints.

Retro Styling: you will find references to 80′s graphic style as well as 70′s snow bunny look this season. Whilst my fluro jacket will not be being brought out of the closet, there are some references to 80′s style-colour splicing and retro prints. Snow bunny’s can channel chic style with fur trim on jackets. At the luxe end, Moncler and Bogner have options for real fur, and Spyder, Nils and North Face have faux fur options- make sure these are detachable for easy laundering too!

Sleek: for the last few season’s, snowboarder style has influenced ski fashion with oversized styles being predominant. This year, ski jackets and pants have adopted a more slimline sillouhette. Jackets are more shaped at the waist and ski pants are sitting on the hips and tend to fit more like jeans. Even the classic quilted puffa style jacket is being cut closer to the body.

Look for ski jackets and pants with practical feature’s: powder skirts, lots of pockets for lift tickets, lip balms and sunscreens, hoods that can be removed to extend wear off the slopes and pants with adjustable waists and vents for warmer days. Most jacket hoods now are designed to fit over a helmet too- so there is no excuse for compromising safety or style.

My ski boots- Salomon Instinct 90 CS

I got new ski boots this season… and I love them!! I am not going to tell you how long I had my last pair of Nordica boots for… but they were well and truly due to be retired. When I did get these boots, I was like my kids when they get new shoes… wearing them around the ski house as I did not want to take them off ( I was better than my father, who as a child got new boots and insisted on wearing them to bed…). I have been skiing for over 20 years, I cover the mountain and am super happy on the steep stuff, but I’m not an aggressive skiier, so I was very clear on my requirements and ability. I did some research online and knew anything would be a vast improvement on the clunkers I had. I also wanted to get fitted properly, by someone I could really discuss my requirements with. I found a terrific boot fitter who came recommended from expert friends. If you are going to invest the time into getting new boots- you will most likely find that you will try on lots. I tried on 5-6 pairs over two days- you start to forget what the first pair were like. Take your ski socks with you, or buy new ones- I discovered that my fave merino pair were too thick and bought new ones.

Funnily enough the first pair of boots I tried on, thanks to my all-knowing boot fitter, were the ones I ended up selecting. The Salomon Instinct 90′s won me over, they are super comfy with a soft fleece lining, and 4 adjustable micro buckles. The CS in the name stands for Custom Shell, so you can have the boot molded to the exact shape your foot requires. I had my technician custom fit my boot and they were perfect from Day 1- seriously no sore feet at all. I have a slighly wide foot so these were ideal in the toes for me. I did go back and have the heel lift put in on on Day 2 as I did start to get a little achy in my arch, curiously on the second full day of skiing (that is 4.5 hours almost non stop).

The boots aren’t too heavy either so you will not feel yourself clumping around once you clip out, and importantly the colour is great- “Starlight” a warm grey with a shimmer (cue eye rolls from The Boarder…)

If you get really cold feet.. you can look at having a boot heater fitted (I know that Surefoot can do this). You will be highly unlikely to need this skiing in the Southern Hemisphere, but you may consider it if you head to some European or North American destinations.

If you are a more aggressive skiier, you might take a look at the Salomon Instinct 100 CS , which is a slightly stiffer boot, but still with many of the features of the 90′s.

Children’s Ski Gear- what to pack

You have booked your family trip to the snow (Hooray!), and now it is time to think about what to pack! If you have never skied before, you will probably not have all the “kit” you need to stay toasty on the slopes. Winter is my favourite season- give me a cosy coat, boots and a cashmere jumper and I am as happy as can be! However, I also suffer poor circulation so I get particularly cold so need to layer up when I ski. On a recent trip to Breckenridge (or Brecken”fridge”) I had six layers on.. no joke. However, most Australian and NZ resorts do not require you to dress anywhere near that warmly. And if your kids are anything like mine, they tend to be immune to the cold weather- I struggle to keep them in their ski jackets. So, what to take, whether it is your first ski trip or you are an experienced snow going family, I’ve put together some ideas for what to pack for children

Children: 3+

Thermals: These are a must have. My children spend much of their skiing and après ski time in their “Stripey’s” as they call them. I purchased ours from Kathmandu. They are often on sale, and are a must have. Now is a fantastic time to look for these on sale at ski and outdoor gear specialists.

Mid Layer: Depending on the weather, this can be a fleece or a long sleeve thermal t shirt. I am a big fan of the Columbia and North Face ones as they can be worn off the slopes as well.

Ski Jacket: One of the easiest items to rent or borrow if you are new to snow sports. Every ski rental shop will have a selection of jackets for children. If you are planning on taking regular ski holidays, I highly recommend looking at some of the “grow with you” options, if you decide to purchase a jacket.

Obermeyer have a fantastic range of jackets and trousers that you will get at least 2 seasons out of. Also look for some jackets that have detachable hoods or liners- this can extend the life of the jacket beyond the ski season. The Powder Hound (aged 5) is a big fan of Helly Hanson, Columbia and North Face Jackets… just like Dad

Ski pants: Some people like bib and brace overalls, but I, and your child’s ski instructor, will most likely prefer ski pants- these are much easier to get on and off, especially for toilet breaks on the mountain. Tuck in all the “layers” and your child will stay toasty. The Powder Hound wears Columbia pants, these have adjustable tabs at the waist, he is heading into his third season in them. Again, there are several brands that offer built in grow systems. One thing to consider- if your child has a slim build, look at ski pants with suspenders to help hold them up- these are easy to slip off shoulders in a hurry.

Mittens/ Gloves: Mittens are easy to get on small hands, gloves are great for kids aged 3 and over as they can wiggle their fingers in. I always pack at least two pairs as these are one item that seems to always disappear on ski holidays. One pair we take for general wear around the resort, one pair is a pair for skiing.

Helmet: Absolute essential- on many mountains, you cannot ski without one and they are essential for ski lessons. These can be rented from every ski rental shop or again, if you do plan to ski frequently, consider purchasing a helmet- Giro ones are terrific- with vents on the top for warmer days and POC have a cool range of new kids helmets POCito.

Goggles: Another essential, glare on the slopes can be harsh on little eyes. Don’t forget to pack goggles or rent with a helmet/ ski clothing package.

Ski socks: Toasty toes are happy toes, ski socks will keep your little ones happy on the snow for longer.

Snow Boots/ Apres Footwear: Stomping about in the snow is great fun… soggy cold feet are not. When you are out of ski boots and walking thorugh the snow, some good snow boots make a difference. I have these Sorel’s for The Powder Hound- they are easy to slip on and off and keep his feet toast warm. You can rent snow boots when you rent skis or at a pinch, some thick socks and gumboots will be OK- just bear in mind gumboots will be a bit more slippery on the snow as they don’t have trea that snowboots have.

Little snow bunnies:

Under three’s will unlikely to ski, so their snow bound adventures will not need the same technical gear as older children. I have some favourites, when we took the Ski Bunny on our first ski trip she was 3 months old, she was dressed in baby thermals and spent much of her “on snow time” in this all in one Bunting Suit from Baby Gap- I loved it so much.

As she got older, we found this toasty all in one suit from Kathmandu- we do think she looks a bit like a Teletubby, but it is super warm, not too bulky and easy to get on and off. The wrists and ankles fold over to keep hands and feet warm and mean no lost mittens and kicked off boots.

Sky High Hair- Ski hair heroes.

No, I’m not talking about the high, high hair they favour in Texas (which I do secretly love…) I’m talking about the challenges of a “good hair day” while skiing and in the mountains. Let’s face it, when you spend the day with a helmet on your head (and I really do hope you do!!) and with very little humidity in the air… having luscious, bouncy hair can be a little tough. Especially if you have hair like mine which is fine, dry and tends to got static in an instant.

I have a few products that I love and have been using on my most recent ski holiday. First up all my new faves are by O&M, an Australian organic hair company whose products have no nasty things and smell like caramel and vanilla … oh so good. I’ve been using O&M Hydrate and Conquer shampoo and conditioner for over a year now. They have a range of shampoo’s and conditioners, but for my fine, dry hair this one works a treat. It has all sorts of goodness- amino acids and minerals … did I mention it smells really good???

Next up is the O&M 7 day Miracle – this is a super hydrating masque, you are supposed to use it once a week for coloured or damaged hair but at altitude, I used it every 2 or 3 days- it really made a difference. It has macadamia seed oil and argan oil which are both super hydrating.

My secret weapon on the slopes however is also a SUPERSTAR product- yes, Rachel Zoe loves this one too!!! It has the very Australian name of “Rootalicious” and it is a lightweight mousse. I was terrified of using a mousse on my hair… The last time I did was in the 90′s when it made your hair crunchy and I was wearing bubble skirts. So I had been resistent for a long time… I need not have been- this is new school mousse- it is fluffy and light and now they are called “volumisers”. After a day of wearing a helmet, this was perfect for tranforming my hair into something a little more glam. And just in case you were wondering my usual ski hair style is swept into a low ponytail under my helmet or in a plait, easy and low maintenance. I often twist my hair into a bun too, so I have some pretty waves at the end of the day. For me, a ski holiday is about low maintenance beauty, I’m busy wrangling kids and wanting to get lots of turns in, but I still like to look good so these products really help!

Oh, and in case you were wondering.. big hair IS big for the next season… if the latest Moncler Fall/Winter 2012 show is anything to go by……

Very French Gangsters; sunglasses for cool kids

These are possibly the coolest kids sunglasses I’ve seen. Your own little Ski Bunny or Powder Hound could rock these on the slopes for an uber cool apres ski look…. The new French brand, “Very French Gangsters” has just released an awesome collection of kids glasses and sunnies…. I want a pair myself.. They are available in selected boutiques in France and online at littlefashiongallery. They do not seem to be shipping anywhere else right now… but I will keep you posted if it changes.. Perfect excuse for an Alps ski vacation…..

Sorel Joan of Arctic Boots- Gear review

I have been lusting after these boots for a while and finally bit the bullet and bought them for our latest ski trip, they were worth the wait!!! Not only fashionable but super warm- they are rated for temperatures down to minus 25 degrees. I bought mine in “Shale”, the boots feature a suede upper with a charcoal and caramel faux fur trim. Now a top shopping tip if you are planning a ski trip to the US, shop online and have your purchases shipped to your hotel. This vacation, I had a new ski jacket (review to come later this week), my Sorel’s, and some new “pretties” (jewellery) waiting in our hotel when we arrived, ready for action.

Back to the boots…. bought mine online at Nordstrom, the arrived in two days with free shipping and returns (great if you are not certain on size) The boots are perfect for après ski and general snow play-including snow-shoeing. They stay dry and super warm. They are a bit “heavy” but I like that. I think if you live in a colder climate and need an “everyday” snow boot, you would possibly be better off with the Sorel Tofino, (lighter and more “fashion” than “apres ski” If I lived in the snow I would buy both of these boots! They are relatively easy to pull on and off- there are small loops attached to the top of the boots to make this easy and they lace up easily. You can also remove the fur trim which is attached to the liners- 2 looks in 1 boot!! They are seam sealed and waterproof too. Highly recommend these boots for some snow stomping!
