Family skiing, snowboarding, travel and fun in the snow!

Monthly Archives: June 2012

Oh yes you did read that correctly- things are cooling down at Bondi Beach as the annual Winter Festival is back which means its ice skates, hot chai lattes, fireplaces and bratwurst at Bondi.

Snowflakes Bondi winter ice skating

Snowflakes on the ceilng!

The Powder Hound and I hit the opening night last night and it was a fantastic event- Veuve, ice skaters in lame & lycra and sausages on a stick- seriously what was not to love!?!

Bondi Ice Skating Winter Festival

Veuve and Snowflakes!

After a slightly drizzly start, Bondi turned on a picture perfect evening- just enough chill in the air to warrant rugging up in our snuggliest coats to enjoy the nights activities.

Now I am not the most graceful of skaters, reallly, inelegant is the kindest adjective I can think of… The Powder Hound suggested a wonky donkey.. However I LOVE the Winter Festival and have been attending annually since the first event outside St Mary’s Cathedral in 2010.  It is a gorgeous event, bringing a little alpine magic to the city. The festival has expanded interstate and now they are on in Brisbane, Melbourne and Fremantle- which for many WA folk is the closest thing they will have to a chilly winter.Ice Skating at Bondi

I tend to gravitate towards the Alpine Ski Hut area of the festival which is where the bar, food, fur (faux) strewn sofas and fireplaces are… this is a little more my pace. However The Boarder is an ace on skates and whizzes the Powder Hound around the ice  usually one one of the plastic “seals” which children can sit on or manage their stability- my top tip is to BOOK AHEAD   for one of these seals if your child is new to skating as there are only a limited number per session.

Ice Skating Bondi Winter Festival

So back to the skating- there are several sessions each day and you can pre purchase tickets online- I do recommend this as the sessions are very popular- for example, tomorrow’s sessions are almost full- there are only 6 tickets left for all sessions when I checked online.  It is a fun outing for school holidays but also a gorgeous, romantical night out for couples.. I do intend on going back for a grown up night out.

There are a huge array of food options to enjoy during your outing- a cut about your usual fast food fare- and all with an alpine flavour- crepes, bratwurst, mulled wine… mmmmm.

There  will be ice skating displays throughout the festival and special events happening- St Bernard dogs visiting on July 7th at 12 noon and a special Disney on Ice performance on July 10th at 10am- Best to check out the website for more information.

The festival runs until July 15th at Bondi and St Kilda. In Fremantle the festival starts  July6th and runs until the 22nd and you have until July 1st to catch all the action in Brisbane.

Skimama was invited to visit The Mama Club this week, a beautiful  club in the heart of Bondi Junction especially for mums!  This is the haven many mama’s have been looking for!  Nannies on hand to look after your children, a barista, beauty therapist, hairdresser, midwife and more. The Mama Club Bondi

The club is a beautiful serene space, open plan, airy with plush sofas to curl up and read a magazine in ( in peace!!!) and dedicated zones for children. I loved that I could watch the Ski Bunny play happily while I chilled for half an hour (seriously that is all I needed to recharge!!). The Ski Bunny sat happily for storytime with Grandma Marion, who was sweet and engaging with the children. She then set about exploring the toddler zone- full of toys which seem carefully chosen for imaginitive play.

There is a covered courtyard with a terrific barista- as someone who is serious about their coffee, I was VERY pleased with the coffee which is specially roasted for The Mama Club- not too bitter, not too weak- I love a coffee strong enough to stand your spoon up in and this was perfect for me- however I know that ALL tastes are catered for – I did ask for mine strong.  I never drink tea but I  was almost converted by Rabbit Hole Teas which are served in individual cups with plungers- so you get proper tea made with tea leaves.. I like!

Rabbit Hole Tea The Mama Club

Lots of yummy food- Brasserie Bread which you can order ahead and collect from The Mama Club.  My absolute favorite, fig and walnut loaf is available and their granola is the business- served with a dollop of creamy yogurt- it is delicious. There are lots of food options for those who suffer from food allergies too- nut free, egg free dairy free… you will have plenty to choose from.

This is a spot for ALL mums too- working mama’s have a special time on Saturdays to make the most of the services which include a photographer to capture family portraits- genius idea.

Oh and if you are looking for somewhere special for your next birthday, baby shower or special event- you can hire the space too and have your party beautifully styled by Mon Tresor! You may in fact, never want to leave this little sanctuary!

Sara, who is the founder of the club has thought of so many details to make life a little easier for busy mums. Having so many practical services and treats in the one spot really is a time and sanity saver. I am looking forward to having a blow dry on my next visit and will be booking in for the next CPR course that they are running.

Check out The Mama Club for more details! The Mama Club Bondi

A first trip to the  snow can be a little strange and sometimes overwhelming for children- especially young ones or those who are reluctant to try “new” things.  Think about it;  it is cold, you are wearing big bulky layers of weird clothes, you are wearing mittens, possibly a helmet, and then  your parents leave you with some enthusiastic strangers who are obsessed with “pizza’s” (snow plough) and “french fries” (parrallels). Now there are some children who take to new experiences with great gusto and are easy going with everything, for others, a little preparation before your first trip to the snow, might make the difference between them hating the experience or establishing a lifelong love of the snow!!.

My children fall somewhere between the two above- my son, is cautious and needs to consider and process new activity, my daughter is gung-ho and throws herself into every new activity with great enthusiasm,

When we were getting our then three year old ready for his first ski experience we  spent a little time preparing him for what the snow would be like-just a few activities to get him interested but not overwhelm him.

Here is what we did;

Read books about going to the snow- one of our favourites, Curious George in the Snow (apparently Curious George invented snowboarding, who knew??)

Curious George in the Snow

Watch youtube videos of kids skiing- this was a favorite, watching kids rip and shred the mountain- google “kids skiing”. There are loads of great videos and kids with impressive ski skills out there!

Make a snowman collage out of cotton balls- fun

Colour in a picture of a snowman/ snowy house. skiier/ boarder- again google “snowman colouring in”, there are lots of sites with fun images

Have a hot chocolate with marshmallows- “This is what we will have to drink at the snow!”

Get dressed up in all your snow gear- even Mama, try on helmets, mittens, stomp around the house in your snow boots- just to see try out how it feels in new kit.

Everything we did was simple, over a few weeks,  and most of all we tried to make it fun and something to look forward too. When we did arrive at the snow for the first time, The Powder Hound was ready for action and even though the Snow Bunny was only threer months old, she has been a fan of the snow since her first trip. During the “off season” she is often asking us when we can go to the snow so she can “Ski fast, mama!!”

Please let me know if you have any questions, or would like to share how you get your kids ready for the snow!

For as long as I can remember, I have loved snowflakes… really, really loved them.. I loved that they were all individually beautiful and 6 sided and just so very, very pretty. As a I four year old I remember getting a magnifyng glass and catching snowflakes on my arm trying to see the patterns (unsuccessfully I might add).  So  I had great fun over the weekend making some of these sweet “Paddlepop Stick Snowflakes”.

I am by no means Martha  Stewart.. but I do like a bit of craft action with the kids…especially if it is a) easy and b) produces something that is able to be displayed in the house.  These snowflakes are super easy, and look sweet hanging in the children’s rooms. They also sparked a conversation about how snowflakes are formed .. Educational AND crafty- WIN!!  These would look gorgeous clustered in a window or painted and hung on a wall- Scandi style

This was a project was best suited to the 5 year old Powder Hound- he was able to think about shapes and how the  paddle pop sticks could work in different pattens,  the 2 year old Ski Bunny had fun playing with the paddle pop sticks and throwing them on the floor….. I enjoyed coming up with different shapes and the finished projects.

Step 1

Craft stick snowflakes

Packet of craft paddle pop sticks

Hot glue gun or PVA wood glue

Pegs.

Step 2

Shape the paddle pop sticks into various  snowflake-ish shapes… and glue the ends together- I used regular wood glue as I don’t have a hot glue gun, and just held the sticks together with pegs while they dried (about 10-15 mins).

Craft stick snowflakes

Step 3

Admire your creativity and hang each snowflake on cotton thread.

Audrey, Grace and Jackie…these women epitomised chic on and off the slopes…. here is a little inspiration for those of you considering your apres ski wardrobe.

Audrey Hepburn Skiing

Audrey in the gorgeous film Charade- oversized sunglasses, and a cozy roll neck sweater… plus red wine and cheese.. cannot go wrong!

Grace Kelly apres ski fashion

Grace Kelly- I think these are Persol sunglasses- she often wore them and this style would still look amazing on the slopes this season

Jackie Kennedy Skiing

Jackie Kennedy with Caroline Kennedy, can make a pair of googles on her head look like a fashion statement.. sweet fair isle sweater on Caroline.

AND this one whilst non ski related… is one of my favorite images ever. Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn backstage at the Oscars in 1956.

On my first ever ski trip, I hit the slopes resplendant in a fluro ski jacket- it was pink, yellow and bright blue- I loved that jacket and I loved that first ski holiday. Since then, my skiing has improved as has ski fashion, although this year there are some retro throwback styles if you still want a flash of fluro.   This season, ski fashion is taking reference from the catwalks, and interpreting key seasonal trends in alpine style.

Some trends to interpret into your ski wardrobe this year:

Colourblocking: is key this winter. Obermeyer have made this trend really easy to adopt with some terrific mix and match jackets and ski pants at reasonable prices. I love the “Malta” ski pants in “Waterfall”-a beautiful blue, reminiscent of my fave J Brand turquoise skinny jeans. Think clear bright colours, sunshine yellow. aqua blue and raspberry. Obermeyer Ski PantI love SKEA’s  signature puffa’s too- I first spotted these at Aspen Fashion Week, and want them in every colour: Tangerine, Peony Pink, Aquamarine and Violet,  these are a great fun pop of colour.

Pattern: plaids and delicate floral features on jackets and pants are a great chance to express your style. My  tip is to  wear only one item with a strong print- work it back with a solid pant or jacket in tonal shade. Roxy have collaborated  with Torah Bright to develop some gorgeous  jackets with graphic patterns, plaids and prints.

Retro Styling: you will find references to 80′s graphic style as well as 70′s snow bunny look this season. Whilst my fluro jacket will not be being brought out of the closet, there are some references to 80′s style-colour splicing and retro prints. Snow bunny’s can channel chic style with fur trim on jackets.  At the luxe end, Moncler and Bogner have options for real fur, and Spyder, Nils  and North Face have faux fur options- make sure these are detachable for easy laundering too!North Face Baker Delux Ski Jacket

Sleek: for the last few season’s, snowboarder style has influenced ski fashion  with oversized styles being predominant. This year,  ski jackets and pants have adopted a more slimline sillouhette. Jackets are more shaped at the waist and ski pants are sitting on the hips and tend to fit more like jeans. Even the classic quilted puffa style jacket is being cut closer to the body.

Womens Moncler Angers Fur Hood Quilted Jackets White

Look for ski jackets and pants with practical feature’s: powder skirts, lots of pockets for lift tickets, lip balms and sunscreens, hoods that can be removed to extend wear off the slopes and pants with adjustable waists and vents for warmer days. Most jacket hoods now are designed to fit over  a helmet too- so there is no excuse for compromising safety or style.

Rob Lyon AtletaOur awesome friend, Rob, from www.atleta.com.au , one of Australia’s top fitness professionals, has put together some training tip on getting fit to ski and board this season. Getting in good shape helps you make the most of your ski holiday and means less sore muscles at the end of the day! And with the season almost upon us,  now is the time to be working on your get fit to ski program.

Whether you are an experienced skier or snowboarder, or this season is your first time heading to the slopes, it’s important to understand the value and benefit of your health, strength and fitness to ensure you stay injury free and have an enjoyable time at the snow.

As fitness professionals, we work with skiers and snowboarders on a regular basis, ensuring that their cardiovascular fitness and strength levels are developed in order to improve performance.  Building strength particularly in the lower body with the large muscle groups such as the thighs, hamstrings and glutes, whilst also developing a strong core and abdominal region will help the first time skier learn the skill without running an increased risk of injury. The stronger our muscles, the less stress we place on our bones and joints.

Read on for 4 exercises that will help you stay fit and strong for the slopes!

1.      Squats:

Squats are a key exercise to develop strength in the lower body, whilst also mimicking the action of a skiers’ and snowboarders stance. The stronger you are in the squat exercise, the safer and longer you will last!

Start with basic bodyweight squats, ensuring that your feet are hip width apart and your toes do not go past your knees as you descend into the movement. To increase the difficulty, add a light weight such as a medicine ball or weight plate on your chest. Once you can complete 15 repetitions comfortably, it’s time to increase the weight!

2.      Lunges

Lunges work the lower body in a more functional movement, and will also engage the core muscles to aid in balance. You will work on developing strong glutes, hips and hamstrings with this exercise.

Once you have mastered stationary lunges, you can progress into a walking variation, where you take “steps” and lunge. Again, you can also add a light weight or include a rotational aspect with the upper body to increase intensity. Make sure your toes do not go past your knees on the front leg, as this will place an increased stress on the knee joint.

3.      The Plank/Bridge

One of the best core exercises around, the plank is an exercise that engages the abdominal muscles, which act as stabilizers within our body. This will help us to maintain our correct positioning and technique whilst on the snow. The plank works both our outer layer of the abdominal region (commonly referred to as the six-pack), as well as our deeper core muscles (called the transverse abdominis) which provide support for the lower back and spine.

Beginners can start on their knees and elbows, aiming to hold the position for 30 seconds. Once this can be performed easily, you can progress to your toes. Make sure the lower back does not sag and the core muscles remain tight and contracted.

4.      Cardiovascular exercises

Without a base of cardiovascular fitness on the snow, we will fatigue much faster and put ourselves at an increased chance of injury.  Any type of cardiovascular exercise that you enjoy is beneficial, from walking, jogging, dancing, riding a bike or some form of social class. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity of cardiovascular fitness on most (if not all) days of the week.
